Introduction All living beings share the same characteristics of life; breathing, nutrition, movement, excretion, growth, reproduction and sensitivity. These are carried out by the body’s organs. These organs each carry out a specific task. The living processes require many different tasks to be carried out; the organs used to carry out these processes are known as a system. The functions of these systems can be changed as a result of injury or disease. This essay will focus particularly on the respiratory system and the effects which asthma has upon systems functions. What is the Respiratory System? The respiratory system is made up of the organs in the body which help you to breathe. Breathing is how our body takes in the oxygen required to break down food such as glucose into the energy necessary for the body’s processes by the process of respiration. The lungs are the main organs in the respiratory system. Red blood cells take oxygen from the lungs to the body cells which require it. They then pick up carbon dioxide, the waste product of respiration and carries it back to the lungs where it is removed from the body through exhalation. The other parts of the respiratory system are; the trachea, also known as the windpipe, which filters the air that we breathe in and branches out into the bronchi.
